Quests from The Panic Room: House of Secrets

Doctor Lector

Jim: Feather, you must be wondering why I'm doing this. Recently I found a message in the living room – an envelope with a tape. It looks like another trick from the Puppeteer. I'm sorry, Feather, people are coming. We'll talk later.

Task: Go through the living room in the words mode.

At the appointed time one person enters the living room hesitantly, then another one. The room gradually fills with people. Jim is clearly surprised by the size of the audience.

There is Jack. He moves to stand next to you, leaning his back against the wall.

Jack: I couldn't just miss Jim's finest hour, could I? But in all seriousness, after our fight and the way I let him down I didn't want to come across as a jerk again.

Jack: I made my people come. Not everyone is here, but I did what I could. You can't make a stubborn ass drink, even if you dunk his head in water.

You missed the moment when Jenny joined your company.

Jenny: It's great to see that many people, isn't it? They believed in Jim.

Jack: Posters caught their attention. It's good that we asked you and didn't make do with that terrible version. If you had used my interpretation, Jim would've been reading to the fireplace by his lonesome.

Jenny: Oh, don't be silly. We will refine your version a bit and use it for the next lecture.

Jack: Right.

Jenny moves away from Jack and whispers to you.

Jenny: Feather, I'm telling the truth. When I was criticizing Jack's posters I thought he was doing it to spite us. But he sincerely wanted to help his brother. It will be better next time.

Jim: Thanks to everyone that came. I'm not dividing anyone into the followers or the underground.

Jim: It makes no difference to me if you follow the Puppeteer or try to get out of the house. Everyone here wants to survive. I'm asking you to adhere to the same opinion and avoid labels for the duration of my lecture.

Jim's pre-lecture fidgetiness is gone. The audience is faced with a confident man, a true professional.

Doctor Firewood easily captures the attention of the audience – it is impossible to look away. Two-hour lecture flies by. In that time no one thought to leave the living room.

Jim: That was an introductory lecture. I'm sure you have already decided whether you need me for survival or not, and whether we will meet here again. I'd like to believe that even this lesson has increased your chances of gaining freedom.

Jim: But I want to end it on an optimistic note.

Jim takes a tape from the mantelpiece. Is that the tape supposedly left by the Puppeteer? Firewood plays the recording – it's a famous song in 70's disco style. The audience livens up noticeably.

Jim: Many of you recognized this melody. And the title fits our subject well. But of course, I didn't play it so we could party, because we don't have a mirror ball under the ceiling!

Jim: But let's be serious. You will probably have to give artificial respiration. But mouth-to-mouth resuscitation done by an inexperienced rescuer will do more harm than good. For now it's better to focus on external cardiac massage.

Jim: To give cardiopulmonary resuscitation and bring the victim to senses, you need to get to the level of 100-120 compressions per minute. But because of stressful situation you will probably lose count. It will not happen if you remember the motif of this song.

Jim: The rhythm of the melody almost perfectly matches the rhythm of the human heartbeat. Jack, would you like to practice on the mannequin?

Jenny pushes Jack to the middle of the room.

Jenny: Of course he does! Come on, Jack, set an example!

Jack: I guess I have no choice.

The last monologue entertained the audience and distracted them from the real reason they were here. They departed, happily humming the catchy melody. Some of them even danced a bit.

You completed Jim’s task. You received a large first aid kit, some points of freedom and some tokens

Jim: Feather, thank you for everything you did for me. I already thanked Jenny, and Jack… Of course I realized that Jack took part in everything. Why else would the underground members come? They won't do a thing without his consent, and they were here almost in full force. Let Jack believe himself to be an unsung hero, it's for the best. Or else he might become nervous that he betrayed the ideals of the Underground and made it face the Followers.
